"Sacred Creatures - Lemur IV”is an original, limited edition, gilded reduction linocut of a decorated lemur.    Lemurs are so cute and I love their tails, so I gave this one a particularly fine one! 

Lemur IV is charcoal, white and pink and is gilded with silver-coloured leaf.  There are other versions of the lemur, some of them gilded and some not (and some of them, like this one, are “unique states”, which means I only made one of that particular version).

My "Sacred Creatures" series so far includes this lemur, a springbok, a cow, a raccoon, an emperor tamarin monkey and a flock of cockatoos (the creatures haven’t all made it to this website, but you can see them on my Instagram page, which can be accessed via the link at the foot of this page).  Each sacred creature is decorated with symbols, flowers and/or gilding.

Technique.  This linocut has been printed twice, first in pink and then in charcoal (after I had removed from the lino the bits that I wanted to stay pink).  The print has then been hand-gilded, by applying silver-coloured metal leaf to the print (using the same technique that monks used to use to gild sacred religious texts).  The gilded sections are then varnished, to help prevent tarnishing. 

Edition:   This print is a "Unique State” (US), meaning it is the only print I made in this particular colour + gilding combination.  It has been signed and editioned in pencil. My printmaking “chop” appears in pencil on the right of my signature.

Paper: Velin Arches Blanc 300gsm (a beautiful, high quality, 100% cotton, acid-free printmaking paper)

Paper size: Approximately 26 wide x 26cm high (there are some minor individual differences, as the paper for each print is hand-torn and some pieces have a deckled lower edge)

• Each print is produced by hand, and has passed through the printing press multiple times to create the final image.  As a result, all prints within an edition vary slightly from each other, with these small variations making each individual print unique.

• The colours of the print may also vary slightly from what you see on the screen (as computer monitors may display colours differently)
