Dragon Bird I

$40.00 AUD

"Dragon Bird" is an original, limited edition reduction linocut, which I have printed in 9 different colour schemes, plus some hand coloured black and white prints.  There are only 26 coloured and 22 black and white original prints in this series, and there are only 9 in this particular colour scheme, which is called "Dragon Bird I".

This print borrows signs and symbols from Chinese and Japanese art, which I am fascinated by (my apologies to those who know more about this if my explanation lacks accuracy!).  The dragon is a symbol of power, strength, and good fortune.  Dragons were said to live underwater, and this one is plunging down to his home among the waves.  He also chasing the flaming pearl of wisdom and truth (on the lower right of the print), which indicates a desire to attain inner wisdom (the pearl is depicted by a circle surrounded by flames and is a metaphor for wisdom, enlightenment and spiritual essence).

The dragon is associated with the number nine, and the waves he plunges towards have nine bubbles around  them to represent this.  The clouds in the sky are symbolic of happiness and good fortune.

So this print wishes you happiness, wisdom, strength and good fortune!

Each of the coloured Dragon Birds has been through the press at least 5 times (once for each colour you can see in the print other than white) - and sometimes more, because if I'm not happy with a colour combination once I lift the paper off the lino, I will re-ink the block and do it again!

Once these original reduction linocuts have been sold out, no further originals will be available for purchase.

How are reduction linocuts created?

If you are interested in how these prints are created, I have described the print process for "Little Creatures - Squirrel", here.

Please note:

  • Each print is produced by hand, and has passed through the printing press multiple times to create the final image. As a result, all prints within an edition are unique, and your print may vary slightly from the images shown.
  • The colours of the print may also vary slightly from what you see on the screen (as computer monitors may display colours differently)
  • As the artist, I retain copyright in all works I produce. Copyright does not transfer upon sale.
